Art for the New Year

Palette_2_4 On Saturday, Jan 7, Paint the Town Pink will be held at the Nandi Art School and Gallery in Montclair. It is a reception and silent auction of eclectic artwork donated by many artists to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The gallery will be open to the public to view and place bids from 11am to 5pm, followed by an evening reception and auction open to the public from 7pm to 11pm with $10 paid admission. Music will be provided by doghouse and baked goods will be provided by the Three Chicks Cookie Company. New Nandi Art School and Gallery, 179 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair. Palette_2_4 The West Orange Arts Council is planning the second annual Artexpo on March 10 – 12. This will be a juried exhibit and sale. Artists may submit works for consideration. Click here to download a prospectus or leave a message at 973.324.9100 to request one to be mailed to you.

Palette_2_4First Annual Paper Mill Playhouse Essex County Student Art Contest and Exhibit is open to Essex County High School Students in grades 9 – 12. Palette_2_4Bass Arts Studio offers classes for children, teens and adults. There is a one day workshop for adults, Energetic Drawing: Dancing The Lines, Drawing The Movement, coming up in February. This workshop will explore the connection between physical and visual movement. No drawing experience is necessary. The full schedule can be found on their website.

Palette_2_4The Montclair Adult School will be offering classes in drawing, watercolor, oil painting, pottery, stained glass, bookarts and photography. These are all evening classes which will start in March. The schedule will be posted to their website by February 1.

Palette_2_4Fiber Arts Classes will be taught by Anne Boyer at the Commonwealth Club in Upper Montclair. Classes for kids 8-12 years old feature feltmaking, basketry, papermaking, sewing, crocheting, and silk painting. There is also a class on doll-making. Palette_2_4The Bees Knees Café offers various classes from Pint-size Picasso to Art Experience for Teens.

Palette_2_4Classes at Montclair Art Museum’s (MAM) Yard School of Art begin on January 9 and continue through Mar 19, 2006. Classes are offered for all age groups and levels. Some scholarships are available. New this Spring is the Le Brun Library Lecture Series, presented by artist Janet Taylor Pickett, professor emeritus, Essex County College. Offered on Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30pm, Understanding Contemporary Art explores the geography of the imagination and its sources as expressed in contemporary art. The museum is also offering field trips. The first is a trip to The New York Historical Society to tour the exhibits Hudson River School and Slavery in New York. This Jan 22nd trip will include a gospel choir performance. Info and registration forms are at MAM’s website.

Palette_2_4Clay classes for adults and teens will be taught by Marion Held. Basic methods of hand building, throwing on the potter’s wheel and glazing techniques will be covered. Classes begin Jan 9. 973.783.7428.
