We hear that some of our locals are hosting three candlelight vigils tonight for soldiers killed in Iraq, a number that has been noted as reaching 2,000 this week. If this is something you're interested in attending, you can find out more here at the MoveOn site. It looks like there are three events right in the vicinity of Baristaville.

Baristanet joins the community in remembering those killed at the Fairfield Street post office in Montclair. Scot Surbeck's words and photos tell the story of today's memorial ceremony:
The observance started with the arrival of more than 40 postal vans, which parked two rows deep around the west side of the plaza and extended down Fairfield Street, flanking the site of the massacre. Amidst an intermittent cold drizzle, the somber crowd, comprised of mostly postal workers, huddled near the monument stone.
Postal employee and minister John Taylor, pictured above with postal employees Bill Cluney (l.) and Anthony Calia, gave a blessing beside a wreath displaying the names of the five victims.
When the ceremony ended, postal workers fanned out to their vans to return to work.

Today, the first day of spring, also marks the 10th anniversary of the tragedy at the Fairfield Street post office in Montclair. A public ceremony in Watchung Plaza takes place at 10 am. Prior to the ceremony, postal workers will have an observance at the main postal branch on Glenridge Ave. The ceremony will include a procession of postal vehicles to this memorial stone, located at the southeast corner of Watchung Plaza, followed by a moment of silence and a wreath laying.
To correct the Montclair Times story, one of the victims, George Lomaga was a resident of Glen Ridge. At the time of the tragedy, The Glen Ridge Paper failed to cover the incident -- despite it being a national story and having a Glen Ridge victim -- because it happened in Montclair. For a group of residents already frustrated by the Glen Ridge Paper's right-wing editor, Russell Roemmele (since deceased), the failure to cover the postal shootings was the final straw. They convinced the Orecchio newspaper family to start the The Glen Ridge Voice.
