It seems like flu shots may be easier to come by this year than they were last year -- but maybe that's just because we haven't had to stand in line yet.
Tomorrow, they'll be giving them out at the Glen Ridge community center (at the train station) from 10 to noon ($15 or Medicare), for seniors and people with chronic illnesses. No such restrictions at Kings in Verona, which will hold a flu shot clinic tomorrow from 3 to 7 pm ($25).
Www.findaflushot.com lists 14 clinics within 10 miles of Baristaville just this week. If you know of others, add them to our comments.
Meanwhile, it appears that the first line of defense against the feared avian flu pandemic is right down the road in Nutley, where Hoffman LaRoche has concocted a flu-fighting antiviral called Tamiflu, which you can take within 48 hours of first getting symptoms. The Nutley pharmaceutical firm just announced yesterday that it plans to supply the Strategic National Stockpile. Just last week, Roche stopped private shipments of Tamiflu due to concerns about hoarding.
Check out Roche's online flu tracker, which currently puts Montclair flu cases higher than the national average but still low overall.

Word is that Bloomfield residents can call our very own Flu Shot Hotline, 973.680.4060 for up-to-date info on when flu shots will be available for the 2005 season. The Department of Health and Human Services does want to clarify that the only information they will be able to provide is what will be heard via that telephone number and by what is seen on local cable channel 35.
Some good proactivity on this, especially considering last year's situation with a shortage across the board.

The Jersey Journal writes today that the first case of influenza has been reported in New Jersey, but state health commissioner Clifton Lacey won't say where.
He did, however, remind New Jerseyeans to practice "appropriate hand hygiene."

Last thing we'd heard from Trevor Weigle, Bloomfield's director of health and human services, was that the township of Bloomfield was planning to have an independent outside auditor oversee the drawing in its flu shot lottery.
Imagine our surprise when we learned in an AP story today that the independent auditor turned out to be the Bloomfield High School Key Club.
Apparently Price Waterhouse wanted $45,000 to oversee the lottery and the Key Club was willing to work for three Vinnies pizzas and a couple liters of Diet Coke. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, impressed with the Key Club's cheap fair and impartial work, is now considering the teenagers for their springtime gig, and the equally-smitten College Board is putting them in charge of grading the SAT's.
