...serving up your daily dish.
A reader just wrote to report a closure on the Garden State Parkway in the vicinity of Watchung Ave., with re-routing of traffic onto Broad Street in Bloomfield. We picked this up off WCBS 880's website:
4:31 PMBulletins NORTHBOUND GARDEN STATE PKWY SERIOUS ACCIDENT BEFORE EXIT 153 (RT 3 / CLIFTON) INVOLVING AN OVERTURNED VEHICLE WITH MULTIPLE EJECTIONS ++ ALL LANES CLOSED ++..DELAYS BACK TO EXIT 144 (SOUTH ORANGE) .. USE THE TURNPIKE (WESTERN SPUR) OR 21 AS ALTS /SB HEAVY FROM EXIT 157 (ELMWOOD PARK) TO EXIT 153 (CLIFTON) ++ ALL LANES REOPENED ++
If you're planning to come back to Baristaville via the Parkway North, you might want to exit at 280, or earlier, to avoid the jam.
UNRELATED, but doesn't Baristanet turn two today? All the best, and keep up the great work!

If this site is planning on getting into the local traffic announcement business, please let us know. I'm not in the habit of checking before I leave for the day. I got stuck in that traffic mess today, and I'm looking forward to the day when in-car traffic reporting is accurate and timely via GPS and cellular/wireless technologies.

Oh, and I got onto the Parkway North from Route 78 and creeped along in traffic for 30-40 minutes until I reached the Route 280 exit, so the best advice would have been to avoid the Parkway altogether today.

Jim,
I'm sorry you had such a difficulty on the GSP today.
I've found that exiting GSP at Union Ave in Irvington is helpful. Make a left (north) and follow Union as far north as you can go, maybe eight blocks. Make a left onto South Orange Ave, go under the GSP and make a right onto Center Street at Seton Hall. Make no turns and that takes you into Main Street, Orange.
A left, and stay to the right takes you to Harrison Ave / Orange Road and into Montclair.
(Question - why can't the friggin' Parkway put up those overhead info boards at 143, 150, 159, and on 78, 280, etc?? )

I was waiting for a couple of the news station choppers to collide - they were buzzing the area right through the six o'clock news. What is it about an accident scene -- two hours after the actual accident -- that draws the media. Justifying their high-priced helicopters?

In this case 8 people were thrown from the van & splattered all over the highway. At least that's what I heard on the 6:00 news. So they clearly smelled blood up in those copters & were following the scent.

The passengers were from an assisted-living residence in Totawa (Wayne?), also according to CBS-NY News at Six. Amazing that no one was killed with eight people ejected from the van. Four were residents, four were aides. I suspect that there will be some long and hard questions about seat belts, too.
