New Guys In Town

Siegelsculpture2

A renowned sculpture by George Segal, Street Crossing, was permanently installed yesterday at the Alexander Kasser Theater plaza of Montclair State University. The sculpture (photo above by Scot Surbeck), made in 1992, shows seven figures in the act of moving through a crossroad. While these figures  were being set up in their new home, a tipster who saw them commented "they were actually covered with blankets, leaving those on campus with quite a creepy visual (bodies in blankets with only their feet showing)". Each sculpture is connected by steel reinforcing bars, to deep concrete foundations. Up-lighting in the pavement will light the sculptures at night.

I'll look forward to the dedication of this piece, I hope the university will use the opportunity to draw attention to the works of the students and alumni from the Fine Arts Department. There are many of those works already installed around the campus.

Perhaps a walking tour with docents?

In my opinion, too much of the work centered around the new theatre focuses away from the university's primary asset -- its students. In fact, it seems that resources devoted to the Kasser programming comes at the expense of the students.

That theatre was designed and built to host a production of "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," I look forward to the announcement of next season.

How much do you think this cost?

There's a gallery in Calcia which shows new student artwork every 2 weeks, another girl and myself take care of the whole thing (she does most of the work these days) but if anyone would like to be on the mailing list to get updates on openings you can email me your email address, good times.

Hats off to MSU for bringing art to the masses!

Apparently there's an Alexander Calder show going on right now, but I don't know where. First I heard there was a gallery in the new building, but then I never heard about it again, so maybe it's at Life Hall.

I walked by that on Wed. nite just as they were installing the statues. Someone walking by asked me if I thought it weird.

I figured it was Jimmy Hoffa or an episode of The Sopranos.

Doesn't look like any of the figures are college students heading off to class or going to an on campus concert.

That's right Franklin! They look like workers. You know, the people that keep this counry running.

Kind of looks like the "day of the living dead"

If it looks like blue collar workers then it's probably because there's so much construction that goes on at that school. Maybe it's an homage to them for helping bring Susan A Cole's dream of becoming the most powerful person EVER one step closer. "She Crazy" She.
