...serving up your daily dish.
Losing track of your favorite hairdresser can be quite the drama for us gals. It's not just about doing the "do," but as confidantes go, they're pretty high up there too. Here's a sudden salon switch we just heard about.... Charles, hair color guru and stylist, formerly at tony Bangz on Church Street, has moved to Salon Pelardi, on South Park Street. Charles (who doesn't use a surname) has worked his hair magic on many of us, even teasing the tresses of Olympia Dukakis before an Oscar appearance. "It's like a total rebirth, like a phoenix rising from the ashes," was the way Charles dramatically described his departure. His new gig reunites him with another Bangz alum, Afrodite Pelardi. Readers, be sure and share any other salon changes that you know about, here.

Can anyone recommend an upscale hairdresser who handles very curly hair (not permed) for women?

Panico's in Caldwell on Bloomfield Ave (right across from Panero's). Ask for Tom Harris. The # is 973-364-9600. He is also great for short hair and color. I've been going to him forever and love his cuts.

Donna at St. Ives has been cutting my curly hair for years. She is great.

Appletony,
Try Mark at Esthetica. He has done an excellent job on my daughters curly hair for years

Jen Martinez at Shag 86 in Little Falls. I blew my hair straight for years and she finally convinced me to wear it curly. What a difference! I look so much better and it is so much easier and faster in the am. She also does my color and my friend's color and does a great job with that as well.

Thank you, curly-haired Baristoids. I will let Mrs. Appletony know of the references!

Nina from BangZ Salon & Spa is absolutely phenominal with curly hair. As someone with extremely naturally curly hair herself...she can do the best of haircuts, styling and blowing out straight. She is available Wed-Fri and every other Saturday. To see her personal bio..visit the bangz website at www.bangz.net and follow the link for "Meet the staff".

In setting the record straight, without Charles in the salon we too feel reborn. In fact, the management team and I are on a mission to change many of the challenges past clients have had. Front desk, booking, waiting lines, attention to detail, client incentive/appreciation programs. It’s no big secret: BangZ has gotten comfortable. Not any more! My mission throughout this coming year (and forever) is to “keep every client we touch!”
With the exciting move a little more than a year away, we are asking ourselves: “What’s the use of getting bigger, if we don’t get BETTER.” Current clients will be seeing dramatic changes in the level of service. So, stop in, try our services, fill out a comment card, and mention my name at the front… I look forward to meeting every client that posts a comment! Chao!

SORRY, I cut and pasted part of my comments... here's how it was supposed to read! :/
We wish the best to Charles on his new flight as a resurrecting “phoenix”! He had been at BangZ and its preceding salon Jacqueline’s for over 20 years. His work has always been exceptional.

I get my hair cut at "Classic Men's Hair" on Passaic Ave in W. Caldwell...the same place used by Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito.
I was in there once when he got coiffed when I was getting the Troll feet trimmed.

I sure hope so, for your benefit, Israel.
While it's true that you have some of the best haircutters, stylists and colorists around, I have to say that recent events have left me hanging and have forced me to take my business elsewhere.
I guess it all started with the departure of my colorist who moved out of state. My personal color stats were never left behind I had no choice but to start all over again with someone else at your shop. Needless to say, the results were less than satisfactory (to the point of tears) so I now go elsewhere.
If you were really true to your word, you would have done everything in your power to keep me on. I was a regular customer for eight years, never made a fuss, and brought a lot of business to your shop.
Naturally, I am posting under an assumed name but the sentiments expressed here are all too real.

I am "not" a person who follows gossip, But Iareal, you just make a ass out of yourself and the management team of Bangz; and your apologies did not make it any better "AT ALL". But to collaborate on your comment about(mission to change many of the challenges past clients have had. Front desk, booking, waiting lines, attention to detail, client incentive/appreciation programs)I really believe that Bangz should start recleansing by removing you from the position you're filling and send you to a management program to work on your skills; "because you are lacking " VERY BAD" in that area". My experience at Bangz for the last 2 years has been like a roller coaster. And with (Kim - my stylist) not been around as often, I was placed with two different stylists that have no concept of how color should be done. With my hair turning from Brown to green, I was sent to Charles the day after visiting the salon . Charles did a marvelous job on my hair by correcting the wreck that was created in my hair after thinking there was no hope (that's what you call a great colorist)with that said, I will be happy to follow Charles to Salon Pelardi's. Isreal this is a little lesson for you. With a person like Charles who has devoted 20 long years with the Salon (as per you comments above), "if you dont have any good to say", "Dont say anything at all"

This is really unbelievable; I've received a letter from Bangz stating that Charles is no longer at Bangz and has moved on ,but with no other notication I thought that he had moved out of town. Thank God he still around. Isreal, What record are you setting straight? Is there something the public needs to know? It seems to me that your intentions towards Charles is a bit harsh, and you are trying to cover it up with you 2nd posting. I have been a client of Bangz/Charles for 8 years, and with no question asked, Charles is one of the best; if "not" the best colorist that works in Montclair. Now I know he's at Salon Pelardi, I will follow.

Someone was asking about Salons in Montclair about 2 months ago and I told them to stay away from Bangz. It doesn't mean because you are Big you are Better. With all the bad experience my family had at that Salon, they probably could write a book. As my mom would say; "There are some good stylist(s) that works there, but the morale of the Salon is pretty low.(not to mention the customer service area that really needs a lot of improvement) I cannot speak for all , but I can speak on my family's behalf, because all six of them took their business elsewhere.

I am so happy that Charles is no longer with Bangz and has brought his business elsewhere> with all my booking errors that Bangz created within my last two years with Charles >got me so frastrated that I had to bring my business elsewhere< now he is out: I definately will revisit his new place of business> Charles is definately the best>> Melisa>

It's a bit of a drive but by far the best place for curly hair is Antonio's Salon in Livinvgston. They are Ouidad Certified and cuts are amazing! Or you can go to Ouidad herself in the city.

Good luck to Charles on his new move, this is something he should have done a long time ago. Wherever he goes, I will follow.

A treasure like Charles is very difficult to find. I have yet to come across a stylist or colorist that can even touch Charles' toes.
Good Luck Charles - Me and my entourage will follow you to Pelardis.
Israel: Thanks for many tears and trauma due to bad hair days I have experienced @ Bangz.
Charles ... will you marry me?

I have been a client of BangZ for quite some time and have been treated with nothing but kindness and professionalism. Sure there have been some mistakes here and there but no business is going to be perfect. I have friends that go to Charles..and yes he may be very talented however there are many other hairdressers that are still there that are very talented as well. I get my hair blownout frequently and have no problem trying different stylists and have been very satisfied with all I have tried. Although I can see how some can perceive what Israel said as negative..if you really read what he has said its that BangZ has recognized that there are issues clients want them to deal with and are going work on being the best they can be. Good luck to Charles and to BangZ!!
