A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the High School Play

Funny_thing_happened Ridgers, don't be fooled by the sign that mysteriously appeared in the center of town last week advertising a Glen Ridge High School production of "Guys and Dolls" -- actually the high school play in 2004.

The actual play this year is the Sondheim musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," and it takes place this weekend: Friday and Saturday nights at 8 pm, Sunday night at 5 pm. TIckets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. And it takes place (as always) at the Ridgewood Ave. School, 235 Ridgewood Ave.

Please come! Not only did our drama club work hard on this play, but our principal/administration judges the club based on how much money we make with the productions and how many people come to them

What age minimum is this appropriate for? I have kids who like plays--I am unfamiliar with this one.

Forum is innocently risqué.

If you can find and listen to the opening number "Comedy Tonight," I think that would give you an excellent idea of what you are in for during the course of the evening.

All in all, 'Forum' is a satire on the Roman plays. It is a 'star' turn for the lead (Zero Mostel, Whoopi Goldberg and nathan Lane (among others) on Broadway).

There are courtesans, and they each have a dance. I would be willing to venture that the innuendo was tame even when the show was originally produced circa 1960.

There is also innocent love, a warrior, a few mis-understanding, and an evening full of fun!

This is one of my favorite shows, if your kids like theatre, this seems to be a very inexpensive way to introduce them to a classic American Musical Comedy and one of Sondheim's first.

Well, they finally got the sign up for Forum on the corner of Bloomfield and Ridgewood.
The kids are in continuous rehearsal mode now.
Good luck to all.
Seeya this weekend.

The play was amazing!!!! Opening night there was but two mistakes. A pirate dropped their sword and when they threw a bucket off the stage it almost knocked the drummer out!! Anyway this was amazing comedy!!!!

To all the people who saw it:
"One word," "Whatever it is it better be good!" "OH, it is, it is!" "WHAT IS IT?!" "Intermission!!"
