...serving up your daily dish.
Ever wanted to learn how to juggle or become a backyard bee-keeper? Know someone who could benefit from instruction in “Accent Reduction”? Want to hear harrowing first hand experiences about survival in Antarctica? These, and about 200 other fascinating and useful lectures and classes (often by Baristaville residents) are what Lisa Redburn, Executive Director of the Adult School of Montclair thinks will keep Baristaville rocking. And judging from the 3,000 students that keep coming back for more each semester, she’s right.
The Adult School catalogue appeared in our mailbox, but if you can’t wait for your copy to be delivered, visit their website now. Pick your passion, quickly. "Classes fill up very fast", says Lisa. And if any of our readers have a special talent they want to teach, or have suggestions for different classes, Lisa is planning next fall’s curriculum and wants to hear from you before Feb. 9. Speaking of the Adult School, I just heard that some 6000 of its catalogues, all those sent to neighboring towns, are "missing in action" somewhere at the Newark P.O. The Adult School is thus "trying vigorously to track them down."
So they're trying to get word out that you can both browse and register online.

After much of America sent itself into a coma over the vocal stylings presented on 'American Idol' on Tuesday night, King George stated that 'cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol" would allow us "to replace more than 75% of our oil imports from the Middle East". On Wednesday, a 15% cut in funding was announced for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which develops wind and ethanol technology. This includes layoff of approximately 40 people. The King's statement Tuesday night was "purely an example", according to energy secretary Bodman. You and I struggle to find the cash to put into our cars each week as Exxon has record profits. My home heating bill tops $500 two months in a row. Something is very wrong. It's time to wake up.

Good job Bud.
You managed to sneer at popular culture *and* the "King" in the same post. (it must be all one long continuum of "plebian-ism" for you I imagine.) The only pointers I'd offer is that next time see if you can work in a slur about "the Christian evangelical Taliban" and, perhaps, some crack about waistlines in, say, Kansas. Because, goodness knows, Bud, you'll have to do better if you want admission to BlueWaveNJ.
In terms of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, whatever shall we do if only those 40 people in all of America can save us? I mean, without the National Monkey With Electronic Stuff Laboratory, we'd have never have had such things as personal computers, the telephone, and MRI machines.

It does seem ironic that a big highway bill was passed last summer. If enery conservation is a goal, why not fund something similar for mass transit?
The grass roots movement of used vegetable oil fuel for cars seems to be gaining ground (it requires some kind of converter for your engine, and then you can literally use old french fry oil as fuel) -- why not promote that?

Hey Rudebuddha,
Were you familiar with a short-lived band of the same name in the Charlottesville, Va. - D.C area in the early 80's?

Well, my initial response is that it seems like concern about sustainability would apply equally to fossil fuels.
Posted by: Skipwith | Feb 4, 2006 10:26:59 AM
Skip,
It does. The relevant question is how many units of energy per acre of torn up land does one get with bio fuel vs. oil?
if 5 acres of land is needed for an oil well that produces 200,000 barrels per year and to produce the same with biofuel takes 2000 acres of soybeans you have to make a choice.
Progressive Europe passed a "green" law requiring fuel to have a 5% bio fuel component. As a consequence vast stretches of rainforest are being plowed under and planted as soybeans.

We're all doomed.....>(8o}>)===
Time to get off this planet
and find a new tabula rasa to pollute.

(With tongue slightly in cheek)
How about a partnership with "big fast food" to utilize their used deep fryer oil?
"McDonalds' and you -- working together for our children's future?".

ROC:
Stop trying to be witty like Cathar. It works for him, not for you. All you are doing is making accusations and clouding the issue. It is merely masterbation. My message is simples: where is the outrage at that embarassing, laughable rhetoric spewed forth Tuesday night, where King George presented smoke and mirrors and, in my eyes, acts in the opposite direction the very next day? The State of The Union is a big waste of time if this sort of BS is going to be presented. A little reality, please. Saying one thing, doing another. King George's MO. Wake up, my man, stop being a sheep. The wool is being pulled over your eyes. All of our eyes.

In addition, Mr. Center, television is largely the reason that people don't read a variety of viewpoints and sources, as I do, and I'm sure you, do as well. And I know I spelled 'masturbation' wrong.

Bud,
maybe if you kept both hands on the keyboard you wouldn't 'mess' up. Oops.

What accusation? It is pretty obvious from you linking the two that you think people too stupid arise from their Barco loungers to "see" issues clearly enough.
But enough of the elitism, it's part of the character of the modern Progressivism.
Your mistake and why Bush's two actions seem at odds is that you assume that the "national lab" of anything is the way to get something done.
There are other much more effective venues for development. Universities and private industry will be more effective at solving the problem.
Rather than install another government R&D program let's create tax incentives and reduce regulation so that private industry can address some of these issues.
That's the message. You just don't agree with it, which is fair enough. Picturing Americans and "Idol" worshiping imbeciles is just the way you justify the electorate's rejection of your ideology.

You got it, that's the mainstream media's view of the 'average' American. When will 'they' get it that the average Ammerican voter doesn't live on the upper east side and get their restaurant tips from the New Yorker?

Blah, blah, blah as usual...same old crap. Same old left this, progressive that. Smug garbage. Good night, girls.
Posted by: Bud Silverglide | Feb 4, 2006 4:56:37 PM
oops.
Was I too hard on ol' Bud?
Was I mistaken? Was:
"After much of America sent itself into a coma over the vocal stylings presented on 'American Idol' on Tuesday night, King George stated that 'cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol" would allow us "to replace more than 75% of our oil imports from the Middle East".
supposed to be some kind of "non-smug non-crap" of the "non-same-old" variety?
Was it a serious attempt to discuss something and I missed it?

Personally, I thought his comments were about Passing Gas.
