Baristaville, Get Ready for Your Snopes Entry

Whatever the fate of Mountainside Hospital, we know certain folks (OK, maybe just Carl Bergmanson) will always argue about where it is truly located. In fact, we told you about the hospital's weird geographical Twilight Zone-like status. It plays out something like this: You're handed your bouncing baby boy and then the smiling nurse tells you "I don't want you to freak out, but his birth certificate is going to say Glen Ridge." The Star Ledger picks up the story as urban legend, even lifting playful comments from another Mountainside post by Baristaville mayors Ed Remsen and Carl Bergmanson. Of course, we are the blog that you dare not speak its name...

In an apparent bit of teasing, Montclair Mayor Ed Remsen once posted a reply on a local blog to Bergmanson's insistence that "every square inch" of the hospital was, in fact, in Glen Ridge.

"Yeah Carl," Remsen said, "but if you Google to find the hospital, it says Mountainside Hospital -- MONTCLAIR, NJ."

And while Mountainside's mailing address says Montclair, all of it is physically in Glen Ridge, except for one little corner of the hospital's school of nursing across the street.

Bergmanson gets a chance to vent some of his other Montclair pet peeves. Seems we're bad spellers...

If only Montclair could get Glen Ridge's name right. It turns out two Montclair roadways carry the little borough's name. "The fact that Montclair spells Glenridge Avenue with no space. It's kind of annoying," Bergmanson said. "The same with Glenridge Parkway. Only in Montclair. No space. That's one of the things I think is silly. It leads to confusion."

Can't do it, Carl. It's Montclair. Space is at a premium.

A proper variance was issued to allow for removal of the space.

These bellicose statements by our neighbors to the east are troubling. I hope the border patrol's are being beefed up.

Imagine a border war between Glen Ridger's and Montclairian's.

Now is it one if by land and two if by sea?

I think we should rent out the soccer dome and have Mayor Ed and Mayor Carl do some single-combat. The loser's town would be annexed by the winner's. Bring it on, baby. Yeeeeaaahhhhhggg (cough cough).

Have the Mayor's go hunting with Dick Cheney...last man out loses

Montclair itself doesn't always seem to know how to spell Claremont.

But there's at least twice as much of Glenridge Pkwy in Glen Ridge as there is in Montclair, so really, who's responsible for that one?

As I have said here, and as I said to Phil, we are very happy to share Mountainside with our very good neighbors to the west, that's not the point.

I am glad that Mountainside Hospital is in Glen Ridge, but fairness dictates that the over-burdened property-taxpayers of GR deserve due credit for carrying the burden of this large tax-exempt property.

Besides, to say that Mountainside Hospital is in Montclair is just not accurate, that's actually the genesis of the article. Every time the Ledger publishes a story saying that Mountainside is in Montclair, I call up the reporter and chastise them (I used to do this even when I was not mayor). A couple of weeks ago, I called up and the reporter mentioned to me that the Ledger's stylebook said it was in Montclair, so I called the Managing Editor and we had a nice little chat. A few days later I got a call from Phil Read - the editor had called him and suggested it as a story.

As far as the Post Office address being in Montclair, that is not really that unusual for properties on, or even near, town borders. There are properties in GR than have Montclair addresses, Bloomfield addresses, and East Orange addresses. The reverse is also true. That is how the subject of Glen Ridge/Glenridge Avenue came up, Phil and I were talking about some of the crazy things that happen at borders, like the block on the side of the hospital, which is the last block of Highland Avenue in GR, but the first block of Walnut Crescent in Montclair.

BTW Liz, this:

Can't do it, Carl. It's Montclair. Space is at a premium

is a great pun.

Crank,

Just saw your post. It is called "Glen Ridge Parkway" in both Glen Ridge and Bloomfield, it is only in Montclair that it is called "Glenridge Parkway", that's what I was talking about when I said:

The same with Glenridge Parkway. Only in Montclair. No space.

Written out, one might take it to be an exclamation: "Only in Montclair!", but, of course, that's not what I was saying.

The same is true for the other street, it's "Glen Ridge Avenue" in Glen Ridge and "Glenridge Avenue" in Montclair.
