NOW SERVING MONTCLAIR, GLEN RIDGE AND BLOOMFIELD
daily dish

Where For Art Thou, Wi-Fi

Sure, there's eateries with free wireless internet access (Panera Bread, Cafe Eclectic), but now dentists are getting savvy. Seen in the waiting room of Bloomfield tooth mistress extraordinaire, Dr. Judith Post, a "wireless internet access available" sign letting patients know they can do more than just read magazines. Where have you been able to get some good wireless action -- in and around Baristaville?

For those who don't know of it, I recommend the EVDO wireless broadband service from Verizon and Sprint. With the right network card (or the right phone, which you then connect to your laptop), you have a broadband speed wireless connection anywhere in the NYC Metro area. You pay $100-300 for the card, and then $50/month for the service. Unlimited usage. It's amazing.

I cancelled my t-mobile account at Starbucks, because for the same price I have wireless access on the train, in any cafe, sitting in the park...

aargh. My vaio laptop is hard-wired for Cingular's offering, which is a lot more expensive than Sprint's.

Hmm. Perhaps I'm alone on this thought, and I have no reason to doubt that Dr. Judith Post is anything short of tooth (perhaps also gum) mistress extraordinaire, but we are talking about providing a convenience to people presumably inconvenienced because they are waiting for their appointment? Or maybe it's just an incentive for patients to arrive early and hope the doctor is running behind.

Bruce -

You took the words right out of my mouth :-)

If I had to wait at the dentist long enough to break out my laptop, I'd be switching dentists.

Please post a New Years thread? Or something with things to do without going to NYC and spending $100 a person. Thanks.

Please post a New Years thread. Or something with things to do without going to NYC and spending $100 a person. My boyfriend and I are new and we don't feel like doing NYC with the million other people. Any suggestions welcome. I don't know anything about First Night in Montclair but I'm going to check it out now. Thanks.

Dr. Post rarely keeps patients waiting long. In fact, sometimes when they are running late, the office calls in advance and tells the the patient to come in a bit later. So I think you can be confident that Dr. Post is offering wireless internet as a convenience, not as a way to placate impatient patients!

The Montclair Public Library has free wirless internet service, wonderful coffee, breakfast food, and salads, soups and sandwiches, catered by Bluestone Cafe. The Isabel Rose Cafe is warm, inviting and unlike the other free wireless places mentioned, there are copy machines, information galore, helpful library staff, and beautiful art in the gallery.
