Major Dudes, Remembered

Yesterday, it was Richard Pryor and Senator Eugene McCarthy. Twenty-five years ago Thursday it was John Lennon.

Jersey blogger Ken Shane remembers all three of them here. The floor is open to other eulogizers.

Richard Pryor was one of the most brilliant comedians who ever lived, a scathing and hilarious satirist who spun comic gold out of the pain of his life.

If you've never seen his two stand-up videos, "Here and Now" and "Live on the Sunset Strip", rent them and you'll see what I mean.

Senior year of high school, 1976. My best bud and I shimmied to the second floor window where our schools P.A. system was kept. We locked the door from the inside with a portable latch type lock. After the door was secured we proceeded to put Richard Pryor's "Bicentenial Nigger" LP on the schools phonograph that was attached to the P.A. system. For the next twenty minutes, until the principal was able to finaly open the door and remove the record, 600 students and fifty teachers laughed and cried as Richard bombarded our ears with his wit, wisdom and four letter words.

THANK YOU RICHARD!

Love,
Mark

Cable tv was the worst thing that ever happened to stand up comedy. Instead of people like Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, and George Carlin, who honed their craft for years, we get 24/7 of alleged comedians who have their 6 minutes of schtick. And more often than not there's not an ounce of intelligence behind what they have to say, but just string some crap together until the punchline, almost always an obscenity that everyone laughs uproariously about. Pryor was great. Today I'm afraid we're stuck with a lot less.

since celebrity deaths always come in threes...who's next (and I don't mean the Who album)

m_i_c (k-e-y?): Good insight - I hate being "Old Fart" but every now and then you have to look in the rear-view mirror for a comparison. Pryor was not initially accepted mainstream - and I was young enough then not to care because he was outrageously funny and told it like it was. My favorite Pryor movie scene is when he pops up from the backseat of the Jaguar that Gene Wilder has just stolen (in Silver Streak) and quips, "you don't do this for a living, do you?" (or words to that affect).
