Scot Surbeck captures the first snowfall of the season.

I'm happy to report that after one snowfall in, New Jerseyans are already losing complete ability to drive when 1-3 inches of snow has fallen, but still believe they can do 65 on the roads with snow on them. Can't wait until Monday night's snow! =)

...and it's the official start of Winter whining and complaining season regarding snow plowing, snow shoveling, snow on the rooftops, snow all over the place. Be a sweetie and buy your neighbor a snow
shovel, or have your kid tear him/herself away from the cell
phone or computer to clear a tidy little path.
Until further notice, let's place a moratorium on tales of geese woes, the horrors of leaf blowers, and brain damage from hearing train whistles go "toot- toot." There's plenty to complain about in Montclair, so jump on in. I, of course, will remain above the fray. certain that no one Who cares about my dislikes, anyway?
I'm waiting with bated breath to hear yours, as always.

It's actually rather icey so be advised walking--I saw a couple of tassled leather sole wearing commuters riding the lips of some icey waves on the cement beach on valley road just now.

"I Couldn't spell cat if you spotted me the c and the a..."
Morning drive wasn't that bad at 7; went over the mountain on Bradford and really didn't hit any schmutz until North Caldwell, which had lots of icy patches. So much for low taxes, eh? Of course, no one in North Caldwell has to be on the road by 7 - Bankers' Hours and all that...

Please, please, PLEASE encourage everyone you know to not only clear snow off the front and back windshields, but off of the TOP of the car, as well. I'm usually not the bitching and moaning sort, but this is just a very dangerous pet peeve of mine. Unfortunately, the main culprits are usually those ever-present SUV's-- perhaps because people can't reach high enough over their egos to clear it all off. A simple solution: throw a tarp over the car! In the morning, just drag it off and, voila, clean car! Please, don't be that asshole.
(And you can be damn sure that if I'm driving behind any car which dumps it's snow on my hood, I'll either be filing a civilian traffic violation with the town, or simply following you and keying your car after you've parked.)
**seasonal rant over**

And so the on-going rant against SUVs continue with its seasonal update.

Better yet, just turn your SUV over every night (I hear it's easy to do) and there will be no snow on the roof at all!

Ok I am laughing cause it really isn't the SUV's that are covered in snow (minus well generalize since everyone here seems to)
It's all those little commuter cars- the small little snowballs darting at you -covered in ice-with a mere hand of clearness in the front window-that you can barely see the driver's face.
But when you do they are still shivering because they haven't even warmed the car up-that are deadliest-
You know they are late-you can see the steam coming from their kitchen coffee cups because they are sooooo late they don't even have the time to stop and get one from DD or anywhere else-
-they begin in Bloomfield and by the time they reach 80 East the snow finally releases itself in a sheet of killer ice onto the cars behind them--
only to finally see the driver as she applies her mascara-while attmpting to find change for the GWB.

I always say there may be snow on the roof, but there's fire in the furnace.

Actually, I believe it's illegal to drive w/o cleaning off your roof. That may be a NY law rather than NJ but I'm sure I've heard this discussed.
Not that it's a high priority enforcement item, I'm sure.

I agree, people can't seem to drive when it snows. I see dozens of accidents ....in my rear-view mirror

cstarling - Mike Barnicle had a name for those vehicles when he wrote for the Globe. He called them mobile snow huts, with only a small slit cleaned off for the driver to see out the windshield. I used to drive I-80 east before sunup - the cars were no where near as bad as the fleet trucks and the semis. When they lost a load from the roof, you knew about it. And I do believe it is a ticketable offense in New Jersey, too.
