NOW SERVING MONTCLAIR, GLEN RIDGE AND BLOOMFIELD
daily dish

November  14

Take That, Montclair

We always thought that astronaut/moon walker Buzz Aldrin came from Montclair. Now, according to a new tell-all biography of Neil Armstrong, reviewed in the Times of London, Glen Ridge should get credit for the astronaut.

Buzz Aldrin’s birthplace has frequently been given to be Montclair, New Jersey. In fact, he was born in the Glen Ridge wing of a hospital whose central body rested in Montclair.

(Cue Glen Ridge Mayor Carl Bergmanson, to tell us that all of Mountainside Hospital is in Glen Ridge.)

Wow, we had it all wrong back in May, when we quoted someone on the Watercooler suggesting a Buzz Aldrin school in Montclair. (That's what you get for quoting the Watercooler.) True, Buzz Aldrin lived in Montclair, but for that all-important birth credit, we find confirmation of Buzz's Ridger roots in the wikipedia.

Now, here's one for you, Montclair:

Richard Burgi, who plays Susan's ex on Desperate Housewives.

our three children born in Mountainside also have Glen Rige Birth certificates - the maternity ward was on the left side - ergo the GR official birth location.

That would be a GREAT claim to fame, for Glen Ridge!
(The thing that most people know glen ridge for is not exactly complimentary)

"The thing that most people know glen ridge for is not exactly complimentary"

You mean Tom Cruise right?

No, the wiffle ball bat incident, pete.

Sorry, I was going for a cheap laugh, but I thought my sarcasm was evident.

I know well what happened. I was in MHS at the time and had friends in GR who knew the abusers.

If Mountatinside is in Glen Ridge, why aren't our property taxes lower?

If one looks at the Glen Ridge birth rate, one would believe the town was the size of Brooklyn and the families had dozens of children.

Mountainside hospital straddles the line, Montclair and Glen ridge - several properties along that line do the same.

My daughter was also born at Mountainside but I would never consider her to have been born in Glen Ridge, All her documents put Montclair as her birthplace even though the birth certificate says Glen Ridge, is this wrong?

One small step for Baby Buzz, and he woulda been born in Montclair.

Posted by: Chris | Nov 14, 2005 6:28:17 PM

what other documents?--if you were born at Mountainside Glen Rdige maintains the birth certificates--that would be your place of birth-Glen Ridge.

"However, there was a stiff wind blowing in from the East the day Aldrin was born, and several dust particles from Bloomfield found their way into his nursery area. Therefore, Bloomfield, N.J., also has a claim to his birthplace."

So do you think he sucker-punched that guy for telling him they faked the moon landing, or telling him he was born in Glen Ridge?

I wasn’t aware that Glen Ridge had a large Hasidic Community!

Let's try that again.....

Ah hell, who cares where he was born? He lived as a child in a modest Tudor home on the edge of Anderson Park. The top floor windows have a great, nay spectacular, view of the Moon over Anderson Park. Who says dreams don't come true!

I was surprised when I received my younger son's birth certificate from the Glen Ridge township offices. Who knew? Not that it matters.

Debbie,

I am in AC at the League of Municipalities Convention, so I'm sorry I was slow to pick up your cue.

Mountainside Hospital is completely and totally located within the Borough of Glen Ridge. The big sign on the corner is in Montclair, as is the parking structure, and part of the driveway, but every square inch of the hospital is in GR. That said, we are happy to share it with our good neighbors to the west.

And Steven, to answer your excellent question, Hospitals are tax exempt...

If you have a child born at St. Barnabus the birth certificate will list Livingston as the birth place. Where you lived at the time of your birth has nothing to do with your birth place. You need a birth certificate for a passport so I am assuming that it is the definitive word on birth place.

Did you know that Buzz Aldrin's Mother's maiden name was MOON ?
Mountainside was founded on a hill in Montclair. I think the G.R.C.C. is in
Bloomfield.

Posted by: Buz | Nov 16, 2005 11:13:50 AM

Buz,

While a good portion of the Golf Course is Bloomfield, the GRCC itself is in Glen Ridge (in fact, the GRCC holds one of GR's four Liquor Licenses).

Wikipedia isn't always correct. They had a whole bunch of stuff wrong about Branch Brook Park and gave a fraudulent website for the Branch Brook Park Alliance. Don't be such a W-'ho.

Only newbies believe that Mountainside is in Montclair.

My daughter was also born in Glen Ridge but we lived in Montclair on Erwin Park Road . The delivery room was in Glen Ridge. Buzz Aldrin went to Edgemont School. My children were friends of Richard Burgi and my daughter still corrsponds by email with him Their whole group was rerally close. He lived with Ann Heche in an apartment in Montclair in the 80s.
