The price of regular gasoline went from $2.70 to $2.80 this afternoon, at the Harrison Road Exxon Station, in the time it took to fill the Barista's gas tank. The attendant said we got the lower price. Click for larger image.
Isn't it illegal to change prices in the middle of the day?

VALERO @ Watchung Plaza was 3.09 in the morning, who knows what they've hiked it to today. I always thought Friday was the day prices changed. Another person I know has a shop across from a gas station in CT and saw them change the price 3 times yesterday! In the meantime, anyone who can afford a new pair of $200 sneakers and got turned away from Division East last week, should donate that $200 to the Red Cross and help the Hurricane victims. I think most families from Montclair could donate at least the cost of a new pair of shoes or a meal out at a restaurant. "Just do it!"

Last night I signed up to be a spotter at gaspricewatch.com. During my commute I go buy 9 gas stations and saw everything from $2.65 (costco in clifton) to $3.15 (Texaco in clifton). The best non-Costco price was the Getty at Allwood Circle, at $2.73.

The Exxon on Route 3 West near Route 7 was $2.71 last night. That's the best price in the area (non Costco) that I have found so far.
It appears that the less-large chainish the stations are, the worse the prices. Raceway down the shore has gone up to about 20 cents more than the average place, instead of 20 cents less, and a bunch of the Gettys in Bloomfield are over the $3.00 mark.

3.38 on Valley Road in Upper Montclair and 3.25 on Valley Road near the rte 46 interchange. I went into Clifton on Valley \Rd and just got it for 2.99 -- it seemed like a bargain. (The owner told me they would all be raising prices 30-40 cents per gallon by Saturday!) 50 bucks and I wasn't even on empty yet.

Jaynee, those sound like morning commute prices, because the cheapest I saw last night was 2.78 by a quarter. Probably long gone now!

Went to the dermatologist in Westfield this morning - paid $2.69 at the Sunoco on Central Avenue!

dj - I saw that $2.73 last night at about 5 p.m.
My mom emailed me the following:
"I heard an interview this morning on FoxNews that gave this website if you suspect price gouging at the gas stations: GasWatchEnergy.gov. He said gas stations are not supposed to increase prices until after their delivery of new supply has arrived. If you suspect "foul play" report them and complain in person. He said he complained to his gas station in Connecticut and the manager lowered the price posted to the previously posted price. We need to be pro-active ~ we shouldn't have to just accept it!"

Jaynee, $6/gal was shown on FoxNews 30 minutes ago in Atlanta! They skipped the 3's, 4's, 5's and went right to 6. What nerve(unless they never learned to count ;) ), I think people have just gone crazy! I think I'll stay off the roads for a few days and when I go out, I'll make sure to organize my errands better--as most people should do. Maybe less demand will give those gougers something to think about. No wonder people are stealing at the pump-what goes around comes around, right?

dj - I'm definitely going to see about telecommuting one day a week starting the week after Labor Day and also carpooling with a co-worker that lives near me on two other days (he works earlier hours than me so I'd need permission to change to his schedule on those days). That would definitely ease the burden for me. I'm going through a tank a week for my current commuting and can't afford $33+ each week!

Is $6/gallon price gauging if:
a) the station owner os selling the last of his gas and he knows his supply will be curtailed, while his costs will continute/increase
b) the public is willing to pay the price.

Karen - if gas ever goes to $10 a gallon I'll buy a bicycle and bike the 20 miles to and from my office every day. And if it goes to over $3 in Bloomfield I will officially be a telecommuter until it goes back under $3.
