Mars Hoax Attacks

There is a Mars e-mail hoax circulating. As far as we know, it's not designed to annihilate your computer. Its evil ploy is to get you to stare at the night sky in search of a spectacular Mars sighting. The Dreyfuss Planetarium offers a warning about this red planet ruse:

Recently an e-mail has been circulating that claims Mars will be spectacular in late August. Not only is the e-mail full of errors and exaggerations, it is two years out of date! However, there will be a very, very nice appearance of Mars in late October and early November 2005. It will be bright and easy to find in the east soon after sunset. The Dreyfuss Planetarium will be presenting a show and a Mars viewing event this fall to celebrate this impressive return of the red planet.

For more info about the planetarium (currently closed for maintenance through Sept. 16), click here.

Who gets their kicks out of posting an otherwise interesting tidbit as a hoax? Are those zany astrophysics graduate students at it again? More likely, someone Googled something or another and found the two-year old article and thought it would be a swell idea to tell all their friends, and the circle began. I got that e-mail a month or so ago and sent it out to several friends. Oh, well, maybe the Meteor Showers will be going on and they will at least see something interesting.

We can only hope they'll spot the rockets lifting off from the Red Planet. On second thought, having advance warning will probably do us little good.

Crap, another case of my posting without bothering to reread the lead-in ... and coming up with similar attempts at humor. Think I'm gonna hang it up now.
