Traffic Alert

The Annual Sunset Classic 5K Run will take place tonight between 6:30 and 9 pm in Glen Ridge.

Expect delays if traveling along Ridgewood Avenue, between Sunset Avenue and Osborne Street. Every roadway along this route, leading toward Bloomfield will be closed to traffic.

We think we can make that more clear. UPDATE: We hear from a longtime Sunset Classic runner that Glen Ridge's offical announcement is wrong. Traffic will be affected from Forest Ave. to Bloomfield. Ridgewood Ave. will not be closed.

I'll be there, rain or shine.

the race goes along forest, not ridgewood. ridgewood ave will not be affected... cross streets leading down from ridgewood ave to forest will be shut down.

Use this course map to plan where you'll be to cheer on Miss Martta and all the other runners! That's what I'll be doing (got a bum leg, or I'd be running too).

Thanks, Chris...hope you're "back on track" soon.

In Bloomfield: Broad Street will be closed from north of the golf course to BHS, as well as some surrounding streets.

"Expect delays if traveling along Ridgewood Avenue, between Sunset Avenue and Osborne Street."

How does one "travel along" a closed road? Is the official statement "wrong" or badly worded?

Posted by: Right of Center™ | Jun 30, 2005 10:01:06 AM

I think it means that the side streets east of Ridgewood Avenue will be closed.

Posted by: Chris | Jun 30, 2005 10:08:49 AM

The delays are pretty extensive. For the past 2 years, my book group meeting has been held on this night and it has taken an inordinately long time to get to the north end from the south end on Ridgewood due to all of the closures.

You should bring something to read during the trip.

Oh, and its' a 5-Mile run, not a 5-K (although with this heat, I wish it was!)

Chris & Miss Marta:
Hope you can make this years A8K (11/25)_Classic... plus the new Goodwill 5K (11/19) in Montclair on the Saturday before Thanksgiving... See you on the course Miss Marta. Get well soon Chris. I'll be jogging instead of racing tonight as I too have a bum leg. (ugh)

Posted by: Dan Murphy | Jun 30, 2005 10:53:10 AM

Go, Miss Martta, go. In the best tradition of Roger Bannister.

Posted by: cathar | Jun 30, 2005 10:57:25 AM

Thanks, Dan and Cathar. I always do the 8KAshenfelter race (one of my faves) but I am not familiar with the Goodwill one. Will have to check it out.

Posted by: Miss Martta | Jun 30, 2005 11:09:12 AM

Dan, I ran the A8K for the first time in 2004. I hope to be there again this year.

Be good to the ole leg today!

Posted by: Chris | Jun 30, 2005 12:10:23 PM

Give'em hell, Miss Martta. Sorry to hear about your leg, Chris. I don't know how old you are, but since I passed 40 injury's are all too much a part of my life. I don't know how you guys keep up running such long distances--I had to give it up when I was in my early 30s.

Posted by: walleroo | Jun 30, 2005 2:35:10 PM

That's easy, Walleroo...I just keep telling my body that its in its early 30s! :-)

Walleroo, I took up serious running only 3 years ago -- at age 44 -- to try to *counter* some of the effects of aging. Losing 10 pounds is just one of the benefits I've obtained.

Posted by: Chris | Jun 30, 2005 4:09:29 PM

So, I'm getting younger. Yeah -- that's the ticket!

Posted by: Chris | Jun 30, 2005 4:12:48 PM

I started 7 years ago @ 40 (although I ran in high school). I love the way it makes me feel.

Posted by: Miss Martta | Jun 30, 2005 5:37:16 PM

Frankly, I miss it, especially on those light summer mornings. But I just can't take the pounding.
