The Graduate

The passing of Anne Bancroft oddly coincided with graduation season. Despite all her other talented star turns, Bancroft was well remembered as the steely-sexy Mrs. Robinson. With the season upon us, we’ve been absolutely bombarded with graduation celebration invites, running the gamut from black tie champagne (ginger ale) toasts, to ultimate frisbee tournaments. And that leaves us wondering – what to get these grads? We don’t want to spoil their fun with anything too serious – we just want to add a little fizz to their Shirley Temples.

Baristagrads003In our vast search of all things Barista, we’ve found some very solid grad gifts right here in our own backyard. While formal stationery might be too “real world,” personalized memo pads and Post-It notes are just right – and come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Best of all, they’re ready in a week. NOTEWORTHY, 24 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair

Baristagrads We don’t know a co-ed alive who doesn’t love to be showered with lotions and potions galore. For our newly minted grads, we’re loving the extensive BURT’S BEES collection at CHELSEA SQUARE, 601 Valley Road, Montclair.

Just mentioned last week for Father’s Day, but equally perfect for the outdoorsman grad on your list – NATIVE sunglasses with four interchangeable lenses – necessary for all outdoor sports, including those early morning bleary-eyed classes. OUTDOOR STORE, 32 Church Street, Montclair

Baristagrads002_2 Every grad going off to some faraway place called college needs a snazzy new Montclair tee – the best ones in town are at SEMPLICE, 465 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair. When all else fails, why not help your grad think big while at the same time teaching them the futility of it all – with a lovely handful of lottery tickets. Welcome to the real world, kid.

For the kid psychologically scarred from growing up in Baristaville, what could be a more perfect Graduation Day gift than brightly colored tattoo art etched into the skin for posterity? Most grads would love to show off their pride in their hometown with a permanent memento that will go with them to any university -- and wherever they may venture in life. How about the Montclair logo, a picture of a Glen Ridge gaslamp, the official seal of the Township of Bloomfield, or the Baristanet logo? POWERHOUSE TATTOO, 545 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair.
