And Now, From Somewhere in Outer Space, By Way of Glen Ridge, It's ...

War_of_the_worlds_2 ... Tom Cruise!

"War of the Worlds" opens today with Tom Cruise bashing at fever pitch. And how could we ignore the boy who played Nathan Detroit right in our home town?

For your reading pleasure, a round-up of all the weirdness:

  • Jersey blogger and filmmaker Lizbeth has posted an internet petition demanding that Tom Cruise apologize for his mental health remarks to Matt Lauer.... or else, a boycott of the new movie. Via Shabe.
  • Tom Cruise is a Nut. (JuiceNewsDaily)
  • Tom Cruise believes in aliens. (Reuters)
  • American Psychiatric Association responds to Cruise. (Medical News Today)
  • Andy Borowitz: Tom Cruise Bids Farewell to Earth (YubaNet)
  • The Wikipedia entry on Tom Cruise (Psst: you can change it!)
  • Last night's "Back in Black" Cruise commentary on the Daily Show (TV Squad)
  • And we're looking for real authentic Glen Ridge memories of Tom Mapother.

I saw the movie last night at a preview and fortunately there is no Scientology involved. The movie is surprisingly heavy for a "summer blockbuster" and genuinely frightening and moving in alternate doses. It ends in an odd way, but is thought provoking and the visual and sound effects are great. Worth $10.

    Isn't it, rather, "Mapother?"

    Thanks, Cathar. Fixed.

Thank you, Barista. I really can't get enough of TC. He's so pugnacious, he makes us members of OBAA look like cupcakes. To wit:

Asked in an interview with the tabloid daily Bild if he believed in aliens, Cruise said: "Yes, of course. Are you really so arrogant as to believe we are alone in this universe?

After seeing this movie, I may need to go back on Ritalin. Tom, can you say 'chemical imbalance'?

    Posted by: frosty | Jun 29, 2005 1:56:50 PM

Uh, walleroo, I hate to blow my image of probity and sobriety, but I more or less "believe" in aliens too. (And no, sillies, I don't mean the bike club of that name here.)

Well, lad, are you really so arrogant as to believe we're alone in the universe?

    Posted by: cathar | Jun 29, 2005 2:33:10 PM

Apparently I underestimated the Order. All right, Tom, you can join too.

    Walleroo-

    What, pray tell, is OBAA?

And should anyone need reminding, there is a perfectly wonderful original "War of the Worlds" film. Spent many a rainy day watching that, "Forbidden Planet" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still"...

TC pugnacious...I don't think so. He is a wimp.

I'm with you, Cathar. I certainly hope there's more to life than what we see.

I'm no longer frustrated! (That was yesterday when I couldn't get the Quicktime link.)

We get it Jessica...you're not frustrated.

Aren't we all still waiting here for recollections of TC back when he attended GRHS? You'd have thought some blabbermouth would have turned up by now. Has the Sea Org silenced them all with threats?

    From carl sagan's Cosmos....not a direct quote...

Any alien civilization with the means(technology) to reach the earth in significant numbers would outmatch us in technology by an amaziung amount. It would be like our current military fighing against a roman legion. I dont think there is any need to fear aliens that might be out there. Agressive races would most likely self destruct before they werre able to explore more than their own planet. just look at any previous aggressor in our own history.

    memories from 25 years ago

there was always the time that he was caught with a beer in front of the high school and kicked off the foot ball team

not that he started or anything

wonder why he was the one that was caught.

Went to GRHS with Tom. I was in the school musical Guys and Dolls with him. Even have a pic of the 2 of us in make up, getting primped for the show. He did well a Sky Masterson. Let me know if you want a copy of the pic.
