Glen Ridge Police are investigating an accident that took place early this morning when a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle and killed. The accident took place at the intersection of Bloomfield Ave. and Hillside Ave shortly after 6 am.
No more information has been released, pending notification of the victim's family.
I was wondering if you guys would post this. I live on Hillside and must have caught the accident right after it happened this morning. Lots of traffic buildup and LOTS of cop cars. I saw the ambulance pull away and was filled with sadness.
The light at Hillside and Bloomfield Ave has been a problem for some time.
My heart goes out to the family of the pedestrian killed.

That intersection sucks. I can just image a kid or elderly person walking couldn't navigate it and got hit. It's a five way and cars don't have a clue how to turn. Few signs to speak of. I agree that intersection needs a revamping. Don't know how often this happens.

There are always "almost accidents" there. I've been near broadsided more times than I care to count. Cars cruising down that hilly part of Bloomfield Ave just don't (and won't) stop at the light.
I hope that it hasn't come to having something horrible like this happen in order for the town to implement a delayed green or something. Anything would be helpful at this point.

I don't know what it is about that intersection, but I have attended to countless automobile accidents at Hillside and Bloomfield. It's a pretty well controlled intersection, especially with virtually no northbound traffic because of the construction. One would think Belleville and Highland would be the intersection that would have had a fatality by now because it's so confusing. Whatever it is, I hope the council and residents use this as a wake up call. After putting the annoying speed "humps" all over Washington, the 4-way stop signs all over Midland, and the rumble strips on Maolis; perhaps it's time that the town council re-thinks one of the busiest and now most dangerous intersections in town. My prayers go out to the loss of the family. As hard as this is to swallow, I feel like this has been just waiting to happen. I hope now everyone realizes how dangerous this intersection is.

I was afraid this was what had happened when I drove past this morning. My heart goes out to the victim's family. The problem with the intersection is that it was designed with drivers who understand traffic law in mind.

Grove and Oxford. It may look non-descript, but check it out 10 minutes either side of a Midtown Direct at Walnut Street. There are yield-to-pedestrian signs taken as a floor-it-before-that-durn-pedestrian attempts exercise his/her crosswalk rights. How hard is a flashing yellow, or a traffic signal timed to the Chestnut and Walnut lights?
