Today, the first day of spring, also marks the 10th anniversary of the tragedy at the Fairfield Street post office in Montclair. A public ceremony in Watchung Plaza takes place at 10 am. Prior to the ceremony, postal workers will have an observance at the main postal branch on Glenridge Ave. The ceremony will include a procession of postal vehicles to this memorial stone, located at the southeast corner of Watchung Plaza, followed by a moment of silence and a wreath laying.
To correct the Montclair Times story, one of the victims, George Lomaga was a resident of Glen Ridge. At the time of the tragedy, The Glen Ridge Paper failed to cover the incident -- despite it being a national story and having a Glen Ridge victim -- because it happened in Montclair. For a group of residents already frustrated by the Glen Ridge Paper's right-wing editor, Russell Roemmele (since deceased), the failure to cover the postal shootings was the final straw. They convinced the Orecchio newspaper family to start the The Glen Ridge Voice.
