From the Sublime to the Ridiculous

Moving right along ... Just about any story that follows the news of Terri Schiavo's death is going to seem petty and absurd. So we'll just prance right in with the latest Anwar update.

Anwar Robinson, the West Orange schoolteacher vying for the title of American Idol, held on last night, but just barely. Apparently his performance Tuesday night of "I Believe I Can Fly" didn't. He was one of the bottom three vote getters this week, and dropped from number one to number two among Vegas oddsmakers as the likeliest winner.

The blogosphere, meanwhile, is abuzz with reports that Anwar's gay, after somebody noticed a-man-looking-for-man personal on a black dating website. Aside from the fact that he and Paula Abdul probably won't get married and produce a lot of cute babies, as Simon Cowell once suggested, who cares?

I was shocked last night. My pick to get voted off was Scott Savol. He seems creepy to me. At first, I asked myself whether I was just turned off by his weight, but Reuben was heavy too. Scott never smiles, and seems like a gangsta wannabe. There's absolutely nothink endearing about him.

Anwar, on the other hand, is extremely endearing. His singing style is similar to Nikki Smith's, though. In fact, it seems like we have some pairs of similar singing styles here, and each week one of each pair will go. Bo and Constantine -- rocker guys. Jessica and Carrie -- country rock, big voice girls (and look what happened to Jessica), Anwar and Nikki -- Stevie Wonder/Brian McNite (sp) styles. As charming as Vonzell is, I don't see anything unique enough about her. Anthony doesn't have quite the chops, in my view. Nadia, however, is original and refreshing -- Tina Turner meets Melissa Etheridge. I hope she continues to grow each week. She's my pick for a surprise winner.

I know no one asked me but.....

By the way, was anyone else as disappointed as I was with "24" the last two Mondays? How could CTU be so manipulated by Marwan 2 weeks in a row? It was so forseeable that Marwan would ask Dina to kill Jack in order to test her. (Remember Jack being asked to kill Chase last season?) And that the gun wouldn't have a bullet in it. (Again, see Jack shooting Chase last season.) It was ridiculous to have Dina shoot Marwan instead -- even the the gun had been loaded, Marwan had his back ups all around him, who would have immediately killed both Jack and Dina. Dina was a smart woman -- she should have known that Jack was too useful to Marwan to be killed.

And this week! Everyone at CTU seemed to realize that Perooz had no real value to Marwan. Yet no-one seemed to give any real thought to Marwan's ulterior motives for making the trade for Jack. And watching the CD with the LAPD log get tossed around...sheesh!

The only other show I watch regularly is the O.C. And apart from the fact that I'm bummed out that it's not on tonight, I have nothing much to say on the topic.

Didn't see the show last night, but as far as I'm concerned, the next person in America who sings "I Believe I Can Fly" should be severely beaten about the head and shoulders with a large pointed stick. I am so, so, so tired of over the top overheated versions of that song. That really has to stop.

Was sad to see Anwar in the bottom too and sad to see Jessica go. It wasn't her week.

Clearly Scott or Anthony should have been the ones to go.

I HATE Constatine and he wouldn't still be around if he weren't using a "rocker image" to get little girls to vote for him. (What kinda rocker doesn't sing a single rock song?!?!) Ugh.

Love Bo..Love Anwar..Love Nadia..(My Top 3).

Carrie sings great, but doesn't have the "it" factor to me. Same w/ Vonzell.

No one will top Fantasia's "IT" factor!

Just saw the rest of the "story".

GO ANWAR! Cool that you're "family"

i agree about Carrie -- she sounds great but doesn't really connect with the audience.

Posted by: Jessica | Mar 31, 2005 8:23:28 PM

I dont know why Simon keeps saying that Carrie has the "it" factor....b/c she doesnt! I think she'd do well in country music, b/c that's a whole other world. And, maybe she'll do well for them since she has no real set personality and could easily be morphed into whatever they think will sell. (I honestly hate seeing someone "good" win the contest, b/c then they're stuck with that horrible contract for years!)

Did you see the latest on Scott??? Dude's got a criminal record and Smoking Gun found it:

Am I the only one in the country that doesnt watch this show?

I find it painful

Posted by: pam | Apr 1, 2005 10:54:42 AM

That's two of us.

Hey, it's not painful! It's fun.

I really love music, so I love seeing new people tackle old songs.

I love seeing them grow as performers, etc.

I particularly like Jeff Davison's rendition of Walter Brennan doing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi."

I don't find "Idol" painful -- I just have no interest in it.
