From a tipster:
Hunter S. Thompson died yesterday in Woody Creek, Colorado, of a self-inflicted gunshot.
"In a nation ruled by swine, all pigs are upwardly mobile." -- Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
"And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - -on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

"Teeth like baseballs, eyes like jellied fire."
I shall sincerely miss my fellow Western Coloradoan.

The man was a sad case the last few years. I saw him at a book signing that was simply a total embarassment. Someone really should have told him very forcefully that acting like such a jerk palls after, oh, let's say 20 years. But instead, media outlets kept paying him so he could afford further foolishness. Good writer for a long time, living a life totally out of control. A poster boy for alcoholism and drug addiction. That's really not so grand a legacy. Well, perhaps he can roister in hell with Sam Peckinpah, they sounded like kindred spirits.
And Sandra Dee on the same day! Oh but we are losting our giants of popular culture.
