November 18
...serving up your daily dish.
Big yellow machines and guys in hard hats are busy converting Bloomfield's Short Stop Diner into a Dunkin' Donuts. The sign and the color scheme are going to change, but the chrome will stay.

I love DD's coffee as much as the next person, but we're starting to run depressingly low on quirky old diners (I never did eat at the Short Stop). My compliments to the new owners on trying to preserve elements of the old look and feel.

I think the old architechture plus the new fangled donuts will make a great combo. I think it's much better than most alternatives. A gas station? Another pharmacy? I'll take the DD.

Oh, my heart yearns for the Short Stop's western egg sandwich. It will be missed.

actually, i thought the shortstop's food was terrible...but it was cute the way they served eggs in those little frying pans.
BUT, if you want a real diner, go to THE EAST ORANGE DINER...all you have to do is follow Ridgewood Ave. all way down into east orange territory (thomas boulevard) stay straight crossing Dodd/Washington (by NJ transit) and at next light bear left then right. NOT only does it LOOK like a real diner (because it is) it has real diner food (including steak and eggs or ice cream on a waffle breakfasts--AND grits if you want an alternative to home fries) and real jukeboxes by each booth which have lots of the tunes we all remember.
CHECK IT OUT!
