Bernard Lefkowitz, author of "Our Guys: The Glen Ridge Rape and the Secret Life of the Perfect Suburb," died of cancer Friday at the age of 66.
Lefkowitz's portrayal of Glen Ridge as a smug and elitist burg that let jocks masturbate in class and throw televisions out of windows at out-of-control drinking parties did not endear him to many in town. But Lefkowitz did have his supporters, like community activist Cherry Provost, who helped Lefkowitz report the book. Ironically, the high school drama club's production last week of "The Laramie Project," about the brutal 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, resonated with the same themes as Lefkowitz's book: the actions of a few, the collective guilt of the many.
"Our Guys" was made into a television movie.
