We're officially jealous. The residents of Walnut Street east of Grove have an epicurean treasure in their own backyard. And while the neighbors who have fast become regulars might want to keep this gem to themselves, the word is already out. Culinariane, located at the corner of Walnut and Pine, has been booked every Saturday night since it opened back in February. The space with its elegant pendant lights, original art work and incredible antique silverware bares no resemblance to the former Kimiko's. Transformed into an inviting space, it has the appeal of a fine dining room without any of the forced formality. From the minute you sit down, Culinariane feels different than other restaurants in Montclair. Your server brings you over an amuse bouche (...just a little something from the chef) and the meal starts off with a bang.
One night it was an adorable mushroom burger on toasted bread disc topped with guacamole, another night purple potatoes with caviar. Then there is the bread, except instead of the ubiquitous crusty Tuscan loaves, it's a surprise. Tiny croissants, glistening with a subtle sweetness --a brush of simple syrup -- are placed on your plate with silver tongs. We overheard a couple raving about them and a bag of croissants appeared at their table to take home (service is very attentive, polished and cordial).
The appetizers we ordered were equally exquisite -- cornmeal crusted oysters matched perfectly with a horseradish cream, and a jumbo lump crabcake (lots of crabmeat) served with a zingy mustard remoulade. For a main course, truffle lovers can't go wrong with the pan seared sea scallops and meaty mushroom ragout laced with fragrant white truffle oil, or the filet mignon in port wine reduction with a dreamy lobster sweet potato hash.
Chef Ariane Duarte has a knack for creating beautiful food (see the sashimi tuna "flower" with crispy wontons and wasabi crème fraiche) that isn't overly fussy.
On a return trip, we caught her in the kitchen making one of her faves, a wild king salmon with grilled radicchio, Tuscan white beans and black olive vinaigrette. Culinariane, at 33 Walnut Street, is open Wednesday to Saturday, from 5:30-10 pm. Reservations needed for Friday and Saturday. In May, Culinariane will begin serving Sunday brunch. For the menu...

Is Ariane the same Ariane who was the sous chef at Ten Park? If she is, I always thought her food was wonderful. Can't wait to try her restaurant.

Ariane Duarte works wonders in the kitchen of Culin Ariane. Her food is art, perfectly prepared, full of color and playfully presented.
The food is sublime. It has an Italian, Middle Eastern and Asian influence, but all seems uniquely Ariane.

Don't forget to save room for dessert...they're in a class all their own.

"Perfection" doesn't even begin to describe this dining experience.

While she was at VINE(NY city), Ariane Duarte was the best chef in the city. Looks like she still is and more....

The Duarte team has created a fabulous dining experience for Montclair. Don't be surprised if we see Ariane on her own Food Show in the days ahead. She's as wonderful of a person as her meals! Great catering service ...Awesome opening night!

Run, don't walk to this place.
Culin Ariane has a filled a void in the Montclair dining scene...simple, yet amazing food. Better than Blu, if only because the chef doesn't try too hard and brings more flavor to the table.
Hopefully they didn't bite off less than they could chew, with only 28 seats and a slew of diners in Montclair ready to jump at the next best thing, which this place is.
A permit for outdoor seating has been requested and should be granted, for the simple fact that as many people as possible should taste this food every night.

I enjoyed our meal there very much last night. Walked up with no resi and got seated. Not cheap - my red snapper entree was $28 - but delicious and well presented. We had a loud party sitting next to us which was a bit of a distraction (someone in the restaurant loudly shushed them - which quieted them down and temporarily stunned the room) but otherwise a very enjoyable meal. Dinner for 2, no desert or coffee...$85. I will return with pleasure!

Spring has sprung and time for us to change the menu. Ariane will not revamp the entire menu, but she will start to make her seasonal changes.
Thank you to everyone so far for the great support.
PS Remember to sign our guest book to hear about any happenings.
