...serving up your daily dish.
Good-tasting food doesn't have to look pretty, and the rippers at Rutt's Hut are the delicious proof. The deep-fried dogs with that special relish and the beloved hut itself made it on PBS' Hot Dog Program, a love letter to the best hot dog stands from coast to coast. Catch it tomorrow night at 7 pm, but be warned, program will induce cravings. If you haven't been, here's the menu. And don't forget to order these...

Good tube steaks at Rutt's. Anybody here ever been to Walter's in Mamaroneck? It is a stand shaped like a pagoda, they split the dogs lengthwise and grill them flat, then serve them on hamburger rolls. Good stuff. Been there since the '40s or '50s. Right after we invented Rock and Roll, we went there a lot...

Could anybody give directions to Rut's Hut from Montclair area?

Ah yes....dogs boiled in oil; ya can't beat 'em because if there ain't any fat in it, it can't possibly taste that good. Rutt's only rival in the area was Three Acres(?) in Clifton on River Road with large, deep fried Schickhaus franks, piles of onion rings (I think superior to Rutt's) and creamy root beer to wash it down. But since my college days in Rutherford, it's long gone. Too bad not to have TWO places with prime tube steaks!

Annie: After seeing that dog pic, I got a yen so we went last night too. We ate so much grease between us (dogs, fries, O-rings, fried shrimp) I think our arteries are a bit clogged this morning and *I* can't afford to do that very often. Fortunately, we don't go to Rutt's for the ambience nor for the delightful personalities of the wait staff. (my daughter commented she thought our waitress lived in a trailer). I believe that visit will hold us over for a while.
After last night's visit, I was reminded why I prefer The Hot Grill in Clifton so much more. They're just a GSP trip away and the tightly wrapped 'take-out' manages to stay warm till I get home. (they even sell their chili sauce by the quart!)

Rutt's is marvelous. What I remember best from my h.s. years (I still dine there) is that Catholic h.s. boys would start pulling into the parking loit around 11:45 PM Friday nights, then sit in their cars till 12. At which point there'd be a gangrush to the counter.
And there used to be 2 very similar places in a sort of hot dog triangle before Rte. 21 was built, Bertlin's and Neilley's. Neither was as good, but one did very well on Mondays, the day Rutt's used to be closed. Bertlin's lasted longer than Neilley's, but all 3 places hark back to a time when there was no "cliff" overlooking the Passaic River, there actually was a sort of shoreline behind Rutt's during rhe 50's-early 60's. The roadbed there was somehow "raised," occasioning talk of bribes to politicians to save Rutt's.

Directions to Rutt's: Rte 3 E to the Rte 21 Exit, take it towards Passaic (upriver). Get off at the exit which reads, I believe, Delawanna/River Road, and hang a left at the top of the "T," then another left. Rutt's is on your left about a quarter mile down River Road.
If you miss that exit, just go to the enxt one for Passaic Park, and, again, take the left as it curves back onto RIver Road (which, as per my previous post, no longer runs along the river as it used to).
Just don't expect decor or, inside, anything even approaching common, tip-grubbing politeness from the waitresses. It ain't that kind of place. Never has been. The countermen are much better.

At your cookout, put the cold carrot directly on the grill and cook
until grill marks appear and heated through.
Put in bun and cover with favorite hot dog condiments.
